I downloaded smaug1.4a and i did what it said, run stand alone, install , start etc.. But everytime someone tries to connect to my ip the connection is refused or timed out, and i read on this website to change Identries from 20 to 0, in system data. and still the problem continues. Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong or what i need to change.
Thanks any info will be great.

There are a few possible problems here:
1) Are you behind a firewall?
2) Are you using a public IP address?
3) Are you using the standard telnet port(23) or a different port, and are they connecting to the proper port number?
4) Does your ISP allow for incoming telnet negotiations on whatever port you are using?

Once you have the answers to those, we can hopefully find whats really causing your headaches with your friends being unable to connect.

Meerclar is right. What is your IP address (the one your friends use to connect)? We can tell something from that.

The ip address that im tellin my friends to use is 192.168.0.3 The reason I give them that is because in Command Prompt I typed something(forgot) and it said IP address....192.168.0.3 That is what one of the files said that people would use to connect.

Umm....sorry to sound so stupid, but how to I know if im behind a firewall.

Given the IP address you're using, we already have all the info we need to solve the immediate problem.

The *entire* 192.168.*.* IP block is reserved for private unroutable ip addresses. The only people that will ever be able to connect directly to your computer with that address are people on the same network. Since you have a private IP, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume either a router with port forwarding or a NAT router is in use.

As for the command you used to get the ip address, it was most likely ipconfig, though that wont help you much since you are on a private network.

If you are friendly with the system administrator then you may be able to get them to set up a "port forward" which will let your friends connect by specifying on the router that connections to a particular port are to be forwarded to you.

Possibly you have another IP address if you have 2 network cards. Are there two network cables plugged into the back of the PC? If so, try using the other IP address.

Failing that, you are behind a firewall which is doing what it is designed to do - stop people from outside getting at your PC.

If you have a decent quality configurable router, you should be able to setup port forwarding to enable people to connect to the routers address on whatever port yer running the mud on and get around the private ip issue. Id guess the router has the IP address assigned to you by charter but I could be wrong.

I suggest you look at the router instruction manual. Quite possibly you connect to it via a web browser, and can configure port forwarding there. However I don't know much about commercial routers - I suggest doing the above, or going to their web site. The router address may be set up on your PC as your "gateway" under the TCP/IP settings.

Try:

http://www.netgear.com/support/main.asp

I don't know your exact model number, so I suggest you take it from there. :)
